Energy Drinks: health risk for children and young people

The Federal Institute for risk assessment (BfR) has issued an opinion to the risks of Energy Drinks for young people. This warns of an increased health risk for the cardiovascular system, if an excessive number of Energy Drinks are consumed in a short period of time. Alcohol and strenuous physical activity increase the impact.

Children and young people, especially in Nightclubs, at music and sports events, as well as computer game parties often significantly more than a Liter of Energy Drink pure or mixed with alcoholic drinks. This was shown by a study conducted by the BfR in 2013.

"The ten percent of children and adolescents, within a few hours, a Liter and more Energy Drinks to yourself, as a High-risk group anzusehen", Professor Andreas Hensel, President of BfR says. "Many do not know that additional consumption of alcohol or strenuous physical activity increase the undesirable effects of caffeine more."

The European food safety authority (EFSA) announced three milligrams of caffeine per kilogram of body weight per day as the Maximum for children and young people: A lot, which is crossed at a body weight of 50 kg with two Energy Drinks already. In case of excessive consumption it comes to symptoms such as heart palpitations, shortness of breath, muscle tremors, Nausea, anxiety, nervousness, and changes in the electrocardiogram. According to the EFSA, it is not in young healthy adults after moderate consumption of Energy Drinks to adverse effects, children and adolescents should be informed about the risks, according to the BfR, but more intense.
