The release of a new Disney movie is always an exciting bonding opportunity for families, and the highly anticipated live-action remake of The Little Mermaid is no exception — especially for these celebrity parents who treated their kids to the “blue carpet” premiere starring Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy.
From Offset and his daughters to Tia and Tamera Mowry and their little girls, seeing Ariel played by a Black woman was incredibly significant. Tia shared some photos of the family outing on her Instagram, writing about the “special moment” she shared with her daughter in the caption. “Cairo is finally getting to see someone who looks like her being represented on the big screen 🎬🖤,” the actress wrote, adding, “That in itself is an extremely empowering moment for me & my baby girl, & something I will cherish forever ✨”
The movie was a special — albeit initially confusing — moment for McCarthy and her daughters as well. The iconic actress previously spoke to Entertainment Tonight about her teens’ hilarious thoughts regarding her role as Ursula in the remake. She shared, “I think they were a little like, ‘What does that mean?’ and they’re like, ‘You’re gonna be a cartoon?’ And I was like, ‘No, it’s gonna be me.’ And they’re like, ‘What does that mean?’ and I was like, ‘We’re gonna remake it.’”
McCarthy continued, “We went through all the other [Disney movies] that we love, and they were like, ‘You’re gonna sing?’ and I’m like, ‘I think so, yeah. It will be even weirder if I don’t.’” She was accompanied by her eldest, Vivian, at the sea-themed event, so we imagine any lingering confusion was cleared up as the 16-year-old got a front-row seat to her mom’s portrayal of the legendary villain.
