Home workouts have become a popular option for Brits, with many of us sticking to exercising at home after the pandemic forced us out of the gym. You don’t need a gym to work out effectively, but owning a few cheap pieces of equipment will take your workout to the next level.

With the winter evenings dark and cold, a visit to the gym after work is usually the last thing on everyone’s mind.

However, you can have a great workout from the comfort of your home as long as you have the right gear.

You don’t need to spend thousands on running machines and squat racks. chatted to personal trainer, international cheerleader and Core Balance ambassador Autumn Sahar to find out the four items you will need for the perfect at-home workout.

Hex dumbbells

Weights aren’t just for muscular weightlifters in the gym, they should be staples for home workouts.

Autumn explained: “Weights offer an ideal way to tone up and build muscles, and muscle burns more than fat which means that for those looking to lose weight it’s a great option.”

The personal trainer recommended investing in some rubber Hex dumbbells for your home workouts.

She said: “Hex dumbbells are a really versatile option that can be used for compound weight training movements such as squats, overhead press and deadlifts to name a few, as well as isolated exercises such as lateral raises and tricep extensions.”

These will be available in all different weights, so find the right weight for you.

Bone dumbbells

Smaller bone-shaped dumbbells are another tool to add to your kit.

The bone shape allows you to easily wrap your entire palm around the weight without the constraint you get from fixed weight or hex dumbbells.

Autumn said: “Bone dumbbells can be used to add resistance to cardio workouts, such as HIIT sessions which incorporate squat to overhead raises, lateral lunges, rotational kickbacks and renegade rows.

“As a rule, it’s best to have a few weight variations to use for different areas of the body.

“An easy weight for the bone dumbbells and a mid-level and difficult weight for the hex dumbbells is a good guide.”


You can also purchase a couple of kettlebells for your workouts.

Autumn said: “Kettlebells are an easier option to use for full-body exercises such as kettlebell swings, cleans and snatches and lunges.

“You can start with a challenging but achievable weight, and as strength improves you may decide to buy another heavier weight to ensure you’re continuing to push yourself.”

Resistance bands

Gym lovers may think that the same difficulty of workout can’t be achieved from home.

However, by using resistance bands, you can increase the difficulty of an exercise.

Autumn said: “Bands can also be used for pull moves such as rows, bicep curls and tricep extensions, as well as as an aid for stretching.”
