Dr Kate Shkodzik, an obstetrician and gynaecologist, recommends the use of a natural essential oil to help ease symptoms of a hot flash. A hot flash is a suffen feeling of warmth in the upper body, the Mayo Clinic explained. The face, neck and chest are the areas of the body most commonly affected by a hot flush.

Some women may experience reddened skin and a sudden onset of sweating.

Other sensation might include a rapid heartbeat, feelings of anxiety, and experiencing a chill after intense heat.

Each hot flash episode can last for up to five minutes, and several attacks can happen throughout the day.

“Hot flashes can be naturally remedied with the help of clary sage oil,” said Dr Shkodzik.

The doctor advises you to “rub three drops of this essential oil… all over your feet”.

Another good place to rub in the essential oil is “across the back of your neck”.

“For a quicker effect, try adding a few drops to a napkin and inhaling and exhaling slowly,” added Dr Shkodzik.

Other recommended essential oils to address hot flashes include peppermint oil and basil oil.

Dr Shkodzik explained: “Peppermint oil is one of the most popular essential oils for hot flashes.”

She advises you to reduce any discomfort by “simply misting it on your face using a water spritzer”.

As for basil oil, this essential oil – when diluted – can also be added to your feet and the back of your neck.

Dr Shkodzik explains that the main cause of hot flashes is a drop is oestrogen levels.

“The best treatment option for moderate to severe hot flashes is hormone replacement therapy,” she noted.

However, hormone replacement therapy is not for everybody, especially those who have severe active liver disease.

“Hormone imbalance symptoms can be so intense that women often wonder if they will ever be able to live a normal life,” said Dr Shkodzik.

“Menopause can be an overwhelming transition, but it’s important to remember that it’s just that — a transition.

“It’s a temporary change in your life that can be manageable.”
