Coffee contains hundreds of different compounds which offer numerous health benefits including increasing life longevity.

Several studies have shown that those who regularly drank coffee were less likely to die during the study period.

Leading health professionals have identified around 1,000 antioxidants in coffee beans and hundreds more which develop further during the roasting process.

Antioxidants help to fight inflammation which is an underlying cause of many chronic conditions including arthritis, atherosclerosis and many different types of cancers.

Coffee neutralises free radicals which occur naturally as part of everyday metabolic functions.

In a study with the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, coffee drinking and mortality in ten European countries was investigated.

The study noted: “Coffee is one of the most commonly consumed beverages with an estimated 2.25 billion cups consumed per day worldwide.

“Coffee drinking provides exposure to a range of biologically-active compounds, including many with antioxidant activity, and higher coffee consumption has also been linked with lower levels of inflammation, insulin resistance, and reduced risk of diabetes.

“Recent U.S. based studies have reported that higher coffee consumption was related to lower all-cause mortality risk.”

The study concluded that high coffee consumers had a lower all-cause mortality risks compared to non-consumers after adjustments for smoking and other health risks.

In another study with the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, the association of coffee consumptions and mortality was analysed.

The study noted: “Coffee consumption has been associated with reduced risk for death in prospective cohort studies.

“Compared with drinking no coffee, coffee consumption was associated with lower total mortality after adjustment for smoking and other potential confounders.”

The study found that higher consumption of coffee was associated with lower risk for death.

Harvard health added: “You may think of coffee as just a part of your morning routine.

“But it may be part of a longer, healthier life. 

We don’t exactly know why this little bean has such big benefits, since coffee has hundreds of compounds.

“But we do know that one compound, chlorogenic acid, functions as an antioxidant (which helps our body fight oxidative damage).

“Chlorogenic acid may also turn on genes that increase insulin sensitivity and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
