People who suffer from endometriosis experience growth of the abnormal tissue in places like ovaries and fallopian tubes, causing pain especially during periods. As everyone is unique, symptoms can be different for each person. However, research shows that skipping coffee or any drinks containing caffeine can help ease the symptoms.
There’s compelling evidence that caffeine can increase the extent of pain felt during endometriosis.
Caffeine, in general, has been shown to increase inflammation.
Because of the areas with endometriosis already being inflamed, adding this inflammatory drink can make the inflammation and the pain that comes with it worse.
There are also studies proving that women report a significant decrease in symptoms after ditching caffeine.
Another reason to swap your coffee for alternatives is oestrogen production.
Too much oestrogen has been associated with development of endometriosis.
And women who already suffer from this condition often have much higher levels of this hormone.
Caffeine may increase your oestrogen production, with research finding that women who drink coffee have up to 70 percent higher levels of the hormone.
Further study from 2014 found there’s no need to worry about developing endometriosis from drinking coffee.
But that doesn’t mean caffeine doesn’t worsen symptoms for those who already have it.
That said, some people find caffeine having no impact on their endometriosis symptoms.
Some women don’t even notice any signs of endometriosis while others experience severe pain.
If you need reminding, here are the main symptoms of this disease:
- Pain in your lower tummy or pelvic pain
- Period pain that prevents you from doing normal activities
- Pain during or after sex
- Pain when peeing or pooing during your period
- Nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, or blood in your pee during your period.
In some cases, women can also experience difficulty conceiving or not being able to get pregnant at all.
For some people, this condition can lead to feelings of depression and anxiety.
That could be another reason to avoid caffeine, as it’s been previously linked to anxiety.
It can be difficult to get a diagnosis for endometriosis, as many other conditions can cause similar problems.
The only way to know for sure whether you suffer from this disease is undergoing a laparoscopy.
This includes a small tube being passed through a small cut in your tummy, so the specialist can see any endometriosis tissue, according to the NHS.
