Diabetes is a common condition that’s been diagnosed in millions of people across the UK. Eating certain foods could help to protect against high blood sugar symptoms. In particular, there are three “diabetes superfoods” you should definitely be adding to your diet plan.

If you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, it’s absolutely essential that you manage your blood sugar levels.

One of the easiest ways to do that is to make a few lifestyle changes.

Diet swaps might be vital if you’ve got diabetes – but making the right choices can be difficult.

However, some foods could be absolutely ideal in protecting against blood sugar spikes.

Medical website Diabetes.co.uk said: “There are certain foods that provide huge health benefits for people with diabetes. They are often known as ‘diabetes superfoods’.

“Although many of these foods offer significant health benefits for people with diabetes, they should not be relied upon entirely.”

These ‘superfoods’ have been claimed to lower your blood sugar levels effectively.

Beans, berries, and cinnamon are all great diet swaps for anybody with diabetes, it said.

Beans contain soluble fibre, which is perfect for diabetes patients.

The fibre works to slash your cholesterol levels, while also lowering blood sugar levels.

“On the other hand, beans are fairly high in carbohydrates, although it is a slower-acting carbohydrate than other foods, like bread or pasta,” it said.

“Still, the carbohydrate content means that people following a low-carb diet should moderate their consumption of beans, but without cutting them out altogether.”


Berries have numerous health benefits for diabetes patients – especially those with type 2 diabetes.

They contain compounds, known as anthocyanins, which helps to lower insulin resistance, while also increasing insulin sensitivity.

“Berries are also a good source of vitamin C and fibre, and they don’t contain many carbohydrates.

“They’re a great way of making often unhealthy or carb-heavy meals into something more nutritious.”


Scientists have long hailed cinnamon as a great choice of spice for diabetes patients.

You can add more cinnamon to your diet either as a supplement, or by simply adding a pinch to your meals.

The medical website added: “Several studies suggest that cinnamon is an excellent choice for people with diabetes.

“It lowers blood glucose, reduces LDL cholesterol, and increases insulin sensitivity.”
