There have been 41 cases of ‘Delta plus’, known as AY.1, in the UK, according to Public Health England (PHE). The strain is related to the Delta Covid variant, first detected in April, and PHE is continuing to investigate its significance. Delta plus has also been found in several other countries, including India, Canada, China, Japan, Nepal, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Turkey, Switzerland and the US.
But what are the symptoms of the new strain to look out for?
It’s still under investigation whether the Delta plus variant presents different to the classic symptoms – persistent cough, fever, and loss of sense of taste and/or smell.
But data fro the ZOE Covid study at King’s College London revealed three different symptoms related to the Delta variant to look out for.
According to data, fever and cough are less common than with previous variants and loss of smell is not even in the top ten, said study lead Professor Tim Spector in his weekly update.
He added most cases appeared to be in young people who had not yet been vaccinated and the variant appeared to be far more transmissible with every person infected passing it on to six others.
But Professor Jason Leitch, Scotland’s national clinical director, told Sky News the Delta variant isn’t causing new or different symptoms.
He said: “There’s not overwhelming evidence that the Delta variant is showing there are 14 symptoms of coronavirus.
“The problem with all 14 symptoms is that they’re all very general – they’re not very specific.
