SARS-CoV-2: What role do children play in the Corona of a pandemic?
It has long been known that the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the case of the Infected is very different. So about at-risk groups such as Elderly, Obese, immunocompromised, or persons with certain pre-existing conditions have a higher risk for a severe course Children are not so sick. And you are also skidding not a “Virus”.
Currently, much is discussed about what is the role of children in the Corona-pandemic play. Dr. Nicolaus Schwerk, a specialist in pediatric pneumology and Allergology at the Hannover Medical school (MHH) informs in a notification of the current knowledge.
No exact statements are possible
Children are infected less frequently with the new Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 than older people? How contagious they are and how great is the danger that you can get hard?
Fixed: Currently there may be no exact statements on this matter, only opinions.
“To us the data,” says Dr. Nicolaus Schwerk missing. “We need systematic studies of large child Numbers with and without symptoms, and over a longer period of time.”
Lower risk for severe courses of the disease
According to current estimates by Dr. Schwerk, the risk is to get infected, for children similar in size, we are for adults.
There is evidence, however, that the risk for children to fall ill if you have been infected – heavy, is significantly lower than in adults.
Dr. Nipunie Rajapakse, a specialist in pediatric infectious diseases at the prestigious Mayo Clinic (USA) delivered in a older post explanations of why children do not fall ill so bad:
“One theory says that we know that there are other corona viruses in the community to circulate and colds cause. And because children are often cold, it is suspected that some of these antibodies provide a degree of protection against the Coronavirus,“ said the Doctor.
“The other thing is that the immune system of children, acting possibly with this Virus inter, what is different from what we see in some older adults, or people with more severe disease,” said Dr. Rajapakse.
And: “An additional factor may be related to the fact that children’s conditions, much less to other underlying health, such as cardiovascular disease, lung disease or a weakened immune system suffer from as older adults.”
Viral load in children is not greater than in adults
As it is said in the message of the MHH, can’t be in the media circle at the end of term “virus spreader” according to the current state of knowledge for children. Of them the same contagion seems to be, therefore, a risk can be assumed as adults.
Dr. Schwerk refers to the recently published study by Prof. Dr. Christian Drosten of the Charité hospital in Berlin. Here, there is evidence that the viral load – the amount of virus, the Infected produce in children the same as adults.
However, Prof. Drosten limits the predictive value of this study. Because the critical studies – School – and household – contact studies could not currently be made because there is these situations – school and budget – present, or they were distorted.
Deaths among children
From abroad are now being reported, also deaths among children.
Dr. Schwerk stresses, however, that in previous publications it is not clear whether these children died because of this infection with SARS-CoV-2, or other cause, and you also had the Virus.
The expert can calm down a bit: The number of known deaths among children in relation to the published number of infected children, as yet, negligible. (ad)
