The best way to prevent a hangover is to avoid drinking too much, drink clear spirits and stay hydrated… but that’s not helpful advice when you’re lying in bed feeling rough the next day. If you’re a little bit worse for wear after going too hard on the booze, there are some things you can do to feel better, according to TikToker and healthcare provider Octavian Mihai (@antiagingpa on TikTok).
TikToker @antiagingPA has revealed exactly how you can avoid a hangover in four steps, and they’re all very easy things to remember.
If you’re reading this after drinking lots of alcohol and haven’t yet gone to bed, you’ll be much better off in the morning if you follow the advice.
The TikToker warned: “Remember, the dose makes the poison! So the less you drink, the better off you’ll be the next day.”
However, even if you have partied hard, you can still improve your symptoms in the morning with these four steps too.
After you drink alcohol your body is dehydrated so it produces hormones that make your kidney hold on to water.
This increases your blood pressure and can give you a headache, one of the worst symptoms of a hangover.
The TikToker explained: “Your liver is also actively trying to break down the alcohol from last night, creating chemicals called thromboxanes in the process.
“It’s this increase in thromboxanes that leads to flu-like symptoms like nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
“When you drink alcohol you also get dehydrated and lose electrolytes which can lead to a headache in the morning.”
To solve this problem, Octavian recommends drinking plenty of water with salt or electrolytes before, during and after the party to rehydrate and prevent or stop a headache.
A good breakfast will sort you out in the morning, especially if it involves eggs.
Octavian said: “To process alcohol, your liver burns through its choline and antioxidant stores, increasing thromboxanes in the process.
“Eat eggs to top up your choline stores.”
Whether you have them poached, fried or scrambled, eggs will do the trick.
Before you sleep or in the morning you should take some supplements to replenish your antioxidant levels.
Your body uses up all the antioxidants you’re storing just to process the alcohol you’ve drank, and that’s partly what causes the horrible symptoms.
Octavian said: “Supplement with 500mg N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and 1g Vitamin C to boost your antioxidant levels.”
Who doesn’t reach for the painkillers when they’re hungover?
The best tablets to take are aspirin, so make sure you stock up on them so they’re available when you need them.
Octavian said: “If you can, take a baby aspirin in the morning to block thromboxanes and flu-like symptoms.”
